Crankin Up The Power On Your 6.5 Turbo Diesel
We are talking about 1995 thru 1999 Detroit Diesels found in GM trucks and Suburban’s. These have an electronic IP (injector pump). We have looked at a ton of Red Neck engineered products on the internet, some of them work great but greatly reduce the life of your engine. That’s why we decided to call our friends at Heath Diesel.
Bill Heath gave us the straight talk on how to safely produce more horse power and torque, to wake up our 6.5 TD. We wanted to go with a proven product to make sure our Burb would be hauling the crew to a few more comps and not on the side of the road dead.
The solution to kickin it up a notch or two turned out to be very simple, install a turbo master and a Max E Tork computer prom. The first thing we did was take off the factory vacuum pump and throw it away. The pump is only used to help to create vacuum to be used when controlling the turbo waste gate. The Turbo Master eliminates the need for a vacuum pump.
Hey we can follow directions, but we wanted to see how much each component improved the performance. The vacuum pump was resting nicely in the garbage can along with the original Serp belt that will need to be replaced with a smaller one when the pump is eliminated.
The Turbo Master only installed and set a little on the conservative side so we don’t kick an over boost code unless we put our foot into it on a prolonged climb. The difference in performance was immediately noticed. I am sure a lot a people are wondering about the MPG. Here is the low down, stock configuration highway driving at 70 MPH produced 17 MPG. Now the turbo master installed without the Max E Tork computer prom 70 MPH resulted in 15.4 MPG.
Now we take out the glove box, install the Max E Tork computer prom and follow the simple 7 minute process and we are ready to roll. The instructions state it takes a couple of days of normal driving before it’s done. My question is how do you drive normal when your ride just increased by 75-80 hp at engine (60-65 hp at rear wheels)? I went out and had some fun! The upgrade makes the old Burb run like a whole new animal, that’s GOOD TIMES! I am only going to use three words to describe it, A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE!!!
Now for the MPG guys first test with the Turbo Master and Max E Torx Prom installed freeway driving at 70 MPH 17 MPG. I have no idea how this is possible? I had my foot into it a couple of times, well just because I could let’s face it more power and torque is a lot of fun!
The final out come on this upgrade is SWEET!!!! What are you waiting for? If you own one of these bad boys throw some fire into it!

Turbo-Master MODEL GM Boost Control
FOR GM 92-95 6.5 TRUCKS, SUBS, AND MHS
It is no secret that the factory vacuum boost control system on the ’94-’95 6.5 is a goofy setup. This system is created to modulate the vacuum signal to the waste gate canister in order to limit and control boost output pressure. The alternate application and release of the vacuum cause’s turbine inlet pressure to fluctuate which speeds then slows the turbocharger and results in a boost pressure which continually rises and falls. The system is powered by a costly, belt driven vacuum pump that is prone to failure. What a mess.
The factory control used on the ’92-’93 6.5′s is a spring-loaded canister. It does not use vacuum like the ’94-newer engines. This factory controller typically operates the turbo to 3-5 psi and is not adjustable.
Our Turbo-Master waste gate controller is created as a direct, bolt on replacement for the factory vacuum canister. In combination with the factory waste gate valve, the Turbo-Master forms a fully adjustable, turbine inlet-pressure (drive pressure) relief system. With the Turbo-Master, turbine inlet pressure is retained up to the preset point of bypass. This results in turbocharger performance that is increased across the design operational range. Even on an otherwise stock 6.5, engine performance is increased by virtue of the resultant steady boost pressure. Combine the Turbo-Master with our Max-E-Tork e-prom in the ’94-’95 6.5 for outstanding performance.
