First American Rallycross Event A Success!
RallyCar’s inaugural U.S. Rallycross held at the New Jersey Motorsports Park was a successful event where the competition was fierce and thousands of fans cheered the intense action. Rallycross racing has finally arrived and made a lasting impression!
The highlight of the Rallycross event was the dramatic A Main Final, where Rockstar Energy Drink’s Tanner Foust driving a 2010 Ford Fiesta won the inaugural event in the 4WD Class. Josh Wimpey hailing from Steeles Tavern, VA won the 2WD Class in a 1987 Volkswagen GTi rally car.
Foust was challenged by Ramana Lagemann (2008 Ford Fiesta), the Subaru Rally Team USA duo of Travis Pastrana and Dave Mirra, NOS Energy Drink’s Andrew Comrie-Picard (ACP), and 2010 Rally America 2WD champion Chris Duplessis (2004 Subaru STI). During the A Main, Travis Pastrana lost control of his car and almost flipped it by running over water barriers in front of spectators on the first lap. Pastrana’s incident caused the final race to get red flagged, forcing an A Main restart. Pastrana was allowed to restart the A Main, but was positioned in the back of the grid and fought to win second place overall. Dave Mirra secured third place after battling with both Pastrana and ACP. Chris Duplessis did not finish the race after he spun during the restart and bent his car’s steering rack.
Foust’s win follows a string of victories, including winning gold medals in both Rally Car Racing and the SuperRally at this year’s X Games 16. Foust now lays claim to winning America’s first-ever Rallycross. “The American event was great!” exclaimed Tanner Foust, “The Ford Fiesta was built specifically for Rallycross and it performed extremely well.”
In the 2WD Class A Main final, Josh Wimpey built a significant lead over second place winner Wyatt Knox and third place finisher Randy Zimmer. 18 year-old and 2009 Rally America 2WD National Champion, Dillon Van Way, looked strong in his first three heat races leading up to the final event, but he made hard contact in the dirt with Knox and spun out at the end of the straightaway after breaking a wheel shaft.
The weekend was bittersweet for newly crowned 2010 Rally America “Rookie of the Year” Joseph Burke, who suffered a broken gear shift cable and slid off the course in Heat 2, furthering his frustrations with weekend-long brake problems. Burke was towed off the course and had to retire from the Rallycross with a blown turbo.
Ex-factory Subaru Rally Team USA driver, Ramana Lagemann, showed remarkable promise on this weekend’s event behind the wheel of an MSE Olsbergs prepared Rallycross 2008 Ford Fiesta. It was Lagemann’s first outing in this car with no prior testing, so you can expect he will become a regular threat in the Main events in RallyCar’s upcoming events.
The first event of RallyCar’s 2010 U.S. Rallycross Championship goes down as a significant moment in American motorsports history. Spectators, competitors, the track, and sponsors were pleased with how this first Rallycross unfolded and the exciting outcome of the weekend.
“This is an excellent racing format and I see so many excited spectators,” said NOS Energy Drink’s Andrew Comrie-Picard, “and the cool thing is seeing so many excited drivers. You could see it when Dave Mirra and I immediately caught up with each after our Heat race to discuss what happened out there!”
Travis Pastrana acknowledged the enthusiasm the crowd’s intense enthusiasm, “I could literally hear the fans cheering from inside my car!”
Over the weekend, a total of 23 Rally and racecar drivers from various disciplines challenged the 1.3 mile Lightning Racetrack, modified to include three dirt sections and “Joker” lap section. Each car must take a “Joker” lap once at some point during their Heat races. A Joker Lap is a small detour – normally over a jump – that adds a level of unpredictability to the heat’s outcome by changing a driver’s strategy in an instant.
RallyCar’s U.S. Rallycross Championship returns to the New Jersey Motorsports Park for the second round of three events in 2010. Join us in Millville to witness this new, exciting, and highly unpredictable form of racing on October 2-3 and again on November 6-7. Tickets are available at: http://store.njmp.com/store/category/9/157/
Throughout the weekend RallyCar distributed exclusive driver interviews and action videos. You can review the videos at: http://www.rally-america.com/events/2010/NJMPRC1/gallery/

Traxxas, the leading manufacturer of hobby-class radio-controlled (R/C) vehicles, will sponsor Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) and its No. 18 Toyota Tundra in three NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races – Aug. 27 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., Oct. 30 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, and the Nov. 19 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway – with driver-owner Kyle Busch behind the wheel for each event.

The sponsor is a perfect fit for Busch, as the 25-year-old Las Vegas-native has been an R/C car enthusiast nearly all his life.

“It’s incredibly cool for me to have Traxxas as a sponsor of the No. 18 KBM Toyota at Chicagoland, Talladega and Homestead,” said Busch, who has 19 career victories in the Camping World Truck Series, including last week’s O’Reilly 200 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. “I worked at a hobby store in Las Vegas when I was a teenager and remember selling a lot of Traxxas vehicles and equipment. I’ve used the vehicles throughout my life because R/C cars have always been a huge passion of mine. Traxxas’ reputation is second-to-none, and it’s an honor for me to have them as a partner with Kyle Busch Motorsports.”

Traxxas, known as the “fastest name in radio control®,” is located in Plano, Texas, and creates, designs and manufactures hobby-class R/C cars, trucks and boats in both nitro and electric categories. All aspects of the business are performed in-house, from the original pencil sketches to the finished product on the shelf.

The company pioneered Ready-To-Race® models that are fully assembled and ready to drive within minutes of opening the box. In addition, all Traxxas vehicles operate and handle like full-size racing vehicles with similar adjustability and are the fastest R/C vehicles available, with speeds as high as 70 mph.

Augmenting Traxxas’ sponsorship of Busch in the Camping World Truck Series event at Chicagoland will be Busch’s participation in the Aug. 25 Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL race at the half-mile dirt oval at Route 66 Raceway. Located on the grounds of Chicagoland Speedway behind the facility’s 1.5-mile oval, the short oval will be transformed into an undulating and twisting dirt course, and it’s there where Busch will pilot a different kind of truck when he makes his Pro 2WD off-road racing debut.

“I’ve always wanted to try out one of the Traxxas TORC Series trucks, so being able to race one at Chicago is going to be a lot of fun,” Busch said. “Racing an off-road truck has been on my list of vehicles I wanted to try out before my racing career was over, so I have to thank Traxxas for giving me a chance to race one of these short-course trucks for the first time. It’s the perfect way to help kick off the new partnership with Traxxas and KBM.”

“We’ve found a perfect fit in Kyle Busch to represent Traxxas,” said Mike Jenkins, president of Traxxas and driver of the No. 47 Traxxas Pro 4WD TORC Series Truck. “His passion for motorsports and drive to win fit our creed as the ‘fastest name in radio control.’ Kyle shows us how a love for the fun and excitement of racing R/C cars can help nurture and feed a motorsports passion that can grow into a lifelong racing career. He still enjoys the competition of radio control to this day. Kyle will bring a tremendous amount of recognition to the R/C hobby in general and, specifically, the benchmark performance that we have established in the top-selling line of Traxxas products. We are proud to have Kyle as a new member of the Traxxas family.”

While Busch is not running the full Camping World Truck Series schedule, KBM’s No. 18 Toyota is competing for the owner’s title. It is second in the standings, 68 points behind the first-place No. 30 truck of Germain Racing with nine races remaining in the 2010 season.

About Traxxas

Formula DRIFT Round 5: After Dark
Tyler McQuarrie Takes the Victory and Team Falken Tire Sweep the Podium

Formula DRIFT returned to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Round 5: After Dark. Tyler McQuarrie piloting the Falken Tire Nissan 350Z found the top of the podium alongside his Falken Tire teammates for their 2nd ever sweep.

The Las Vegas Motor Speedway hosted the event to a sell out crowd under the stars and lights in the Nevada desert. Round 5: After Dark featured the Vegas Pro Am finals, Fatlace One of One Showcase car show, Monster truck demonstration, Drag Races, and was highlighted with the Formula DRIFT championship competition. The competition heats up with only two events remaining in the 2010 Championship season.

“This event in Las Vegas is challenging for everyone involved with Formula DRIFT including the staff, teams, and sponsors, but at the end of the day the event exceeded all expectations with a sell-out crowd, amazing competition, and a tightening chase for the Championship heading into Sonoma,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “The level of competition is at an all-time high and teams are setting the bar for the sport of drifting worldwide.”

The action filled weekend came down to a battle of the V8’s. Making the Top 4 for his first time, Tony Brakohiapa in the Cooper Tire / BSP Tuskegee Airmen Mustang went against point leader, Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the Monster Energy / Falken Tire Ford Mustang for third place. Gittin gained the victory and maintains the championship points lead. The final battle pitted Falken teammates Daijiro Yoshihara in the Discount Tire / Falken Tire Nissan S13 against Tyler McQuarrie in the Falken Tire Nissan 350Z. Mechanical problems forced Yoshihara to forfeit from the competition giving McQuarrie his first ever victory and moves him up the rankings into 9th place overall.

“The Falken Tire Nissan 350Z was unreal in every practice and through qualifying. It was one of those events where I could just feel it,” said Tyler McQuarrie, winner of Round 5: After Dark. “To get my first career victory here in Las Vegas feels incredible and for the Falken Tire team to get the second ever sweep in history is a milestone for the team.”

McQuarrie will carry the momentum of the victory to the next stop of the Formula DRIFT championship at his hometown track for Round 6: Point of Impact on September 10-11. This is the last event before the Finals in October and the drivers will be sure to put it all on the line for a chance at the title. Tickets are available on-line.
In NASCAR, few are better than Kyle Busch, a fact proven by his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series wins at Bristol Motor Speedway this week. But in the Traxxas TORC Series Presented by AMSOIL, he’s a green rookie about to make his PRO 2WD debut this week at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.

In order to run with some of the best off-road racers in the world, Busch tested at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway earlier this week and impressed those in attendance. He shared the track with Rob MacCachren, the current PRO 2 points leader, and Jeff Kincaid, a winner last weekend in Bark River, and his fastest lap was only one-tenth of a second off the fastest time of the day.

On his Twitter account immediately following the test, Busch voiced his excitement. “Was n Crandon, WI today testin the Traxxas TORC off road truck. What a blast to drive. Got pretty good I guess. As fast as the good guys.”

Busch will pilot a Traxxas-sponsored machine fielded by Mark Jenkins and Mike Jenkins, both of whom were at the test at the “Big House.” Mike said the Las Vegas native and former NASCAR Nationwide Series champion started the day with no experience and ended it as an off-road racer.

“He was tip-toeing around on the first session, getting the feel,” Jenkins said. “He was within three or seconds of the fast lap in his first time out. That’s mind blowing.”

The day just kept getting better and better for Busch as he listened to Crandon veteran Kincaid on the best lines and how to adapt to the different turns and track conditions. “He was taking good instructions from Kincaid,” Jenkins said. “He stayed focused with what Jeff was telling him.”

It was the end of the day, though, where Busch showed just how good he was. During the fifth session, he watched MacCachren and Scott Taylor take laps and immediately wanted to get back in the truck to find the extra second he was missing. In the last session, MacCachren got into Busch’s truck to give it a shakedown run to find the vehicle’s baseline time. Busch’s runs were nearly as fast as MacCachren’s.

“It’s one thing to (race) on pavement and it’s another to do it off-road,” Jenkins said. “All the possible track conditions were thrown at him and he made the transition to off-road racer in one day.”

Busch and the rest of the TORC Series run next Wednesday and Thursday at Route 66 Raceway. For tickets to the race, visit TORCSeries.com or Route66Raceway.com. Fans can also watch the races live at TORCSeries.com and later in the year when the race is aired on the Discovery HD Theater program, “The Off Road Championship,” making its on-air debut Sept. 2.

We all need a second attempt at some things and I am no different. Unfortunately off-road racing is not a game of second chances. The Lands End Hill climb was the 3rd stop in the 2010 Ultra 4 Grand Slam Series; a series that consists of the top racers in the sport. The race is 5.5 miles long with a 2500 foot elevation gain along a twisting, turning gravel road. One miscalculation from the driver seat can send you plummeting off the side of the steep shelf road.

The 4432 Amsoil Ford was ready. I had stripped every bit of weight off that I could. I had new BF Goodrich All Terrain TA’s fitted and ready to go. I had chosen to run a tire that anyone can buy off the shelf of the local tire store, was it the right choice? The time to question myself was over, time to concentrate. As I waited in line for the green flag to drop my mind wandered, I was running solo, could I remember all the turns, what if, what if. The green flag dropped and I focused on my first run of four practice runs for the day. Each practice run I was able to better my time.

Sunday was race day and as the sun came up the jitters in my stomach followed. Why was I nervous? I knew the road, the car was working well, and it’s only as bad as I make it. First race of the day I ran somewhat conservative but pushed as hard as I dared. My tire choice had paid off and the BFG All Terrain tires held the road like glue as the Proformance Unlimited 347 Ford screamed up the hill. The run felt good and I laid down the 4th fastest time in the Ultra 4 class. Second and final run I was going for it, no holding back!

As I left the start line on the second run I had committed myself to pushing harder into the turns before mashing my Spidertrax brakes. The first turn was a reality check as the front left caught a groove and the right rear tire lunged into the air, as I pictured myself cart wheeling into the trees instinct took over and I hit the gas. No time to think, I had to prepare for the next turn. Each turn brought me closer to finish line, the temperature gauge kept climbing but I wasn’t about to back out of it. Drifting through switchbacks I knew I was fast, was I fast enough? I had bettered my time but my 5:58.80 was only good enough for 7th place. Finishing position was determined by only a few seconds but that doesn’t matter. As I packed up the trailer I found my mind wandering again, if I only had one more chance…

Video of my run is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FFwsUYb5c0

Crankin Up The Power On Your 6.5 Turbo Diesel
We are talking about 1995 thru 1999 Detroit Diesels found in GM trucks and Suburban’s. These have an electronic IP (injector pump). We have looked at a ton of Red Neck engineered products on the internet, some of them work great but greatly reduce the life of your engine. That’s why we decided to call our friends at Heath Diesel.
Bill Heath gave us the straight talk on how to safely produce more horse power and torque, to wake up our 6.5 TD. We wanted to go with a proven product to make sure our Burb would be hauling the crew to a few more comps and not on the side of the road dead.
The solution to kickin it up a notch or two turned out to be very simple, install a turbo master and a Max E Tork computer prom. The first thing we did was take off the factory vacuum pump and throw it away. The pump is only used to help to create vacuum to be used when controlling the turbo waste gate. The Turbo Master eliminates the need for a vacuum pump.
Hey we can follow directions, but we wanted to see how much each component improved the performance. The vacuum pump was resting nicely in the garbage can along with the original Serp belt that will need to be replaced with a smaller one when the pump is eliminated.
The Turbo Master only installed and set a little on the conservative side so we don’t kick an over boost code unless we put our foot into it on a prolonged climb. The difference in performance was immediately noticed. I am sure a lot a people are wondering about the MPG. Here is the low down, stock configuration highway driving at 70 MPH produced 17 MPG. Now the turbo master installed without the Max E Tork computer prom 70 MPH resulted in 15.4 MPG.
Now we take out the glove box, install the Max E Tork computer prom and follow the simple 7 minute process and we are ready to roll. The instructions state it takes a couple of days of normal driving before it’s done. My question is how do you drive normal when your ride just increased by 75-80 hp at engine (60-65 hp at rear wheels)? I went out and had some fun! The upgrade makes the old Burb run like a whole new animal, that’s GOOD TIMES! I am only going to use three words to describe it, A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE!!!
Now for the MPG guys first test with the Turbo Master and Max E Torx Prom installed freeway driving at 70 MPH 17 MPG. I have no idea how this is possible? I had my foot into it a couple of times, well just because I could let’s face it more power and torque is a lot of fun!
The final out come on this upgrade is SWEET!!!! What are you waiting for? If you own one of these bad boys throw some fire into it!
A special thanks to Bill and everyone at Heath Diesel. They Know the 6.5 TD inside and out.
Turbo-Master MODEL GM Boost Control
FOR GM 92-95 6.5 TRUCKS, SUBS, AND MHS

It is no secret that the factory vacuum boost control system on the ’94-’95 6.5 is a goofy setup. This system is created to modulate the vacuum signal to the waste gate canister in order to limit and control boost output pressure. The alternate application and release of the vacuum cause’s turbine inlet pressure to fluctuate which speeds then slows the turbocharger and results in a boost pressure which continually rises and falls. The system is powered by a costly, belt driven vacuum pump that is prone to failure. What a mess.

The factory control used on the ’92-’93 6.5′s is a spring-loaded canister. It does not use vacuum like the ’94-newer engines. This factory controller typically operates the turbo to 3-5 psi and is not adjustable.

Our Turbo-Master waste gate controller is created as a direct, bolt on replacement for the factory vacuum canister. In combination with the factory waste gate valve, the Turbo-Master forms a fully adjustable, turbine inlet-pressure (drive pressure) relief system. With the Turbo-Master, turbine inlet pressure is retained up to the preset point of bypass. This results in turbocharger performance that is increased across the design operational range. Even on an otherwise stock 6.5, engine performance is increased by virtue of the resultant steady boost pressure. Combine the Turbo-Master with our Max-E-Tork e-prom in the ’94-’95 6.5 for outstanding performance.

PERFORMANCE GL4 upgrade prom 1994-1995 C-K models
MAXIMUM POWER AND TORQUE!

This fantastic engine control programming is based on highly refined and totally unique fuel delivery and start of injection timing curves. Engineered as a ‘total-performance’ engine control program, the GL4 delivers crisp throttle response and exceptional tip-in power along with strong full throttle performance. The new GL4 Series also features a unique, performance oriented, automatic transmission shift-schedule. This shifting schedule is designed to control automatic upshifts to maximize engine output and vehicle acceleration.
You will also enjoy the GL4′s unique Tork-Lok feature. This maintains application of the torque converter lockup clutch on deceleration. What a great improvement!
The engine & transmission are directed to function as a tightly coordinated team to deliver maximum vehicle performance. The GL4 is perfectly suited for the driver who enjoys a spirited vehicle.
You will appreciate the GL4′s unique Glow-Plug timing, too. The initial glow-saturation is longer for better cold-weather starts. The new post-startup glow cycles keep your 6.5 running smoothly and with a greatly reduced cold start smoke level.

Raceline Wheels are so tough they can run without a tire for multiple miles in the rough Nevada desert. Jesse Haines crossed the finish line without a tire for over 10 miles, and Chris Ridgway made it 20 miles to the next pit on a Raceline Wheel. In both instances only seconds separated them from their competitor at the finish line.
Jesse Haines competed in the 2010 VORRA Xtreme Outlaw 250 race at the new Exit 28 Motorsports Park just outside Reno, NV. In his race report he wrote: “We had a few flats, but that was inevitable on a race course like this. With maybe 10 miles left we hit something pretty hard and within a few miles I knew we had lost a tire. At that point we were getting close to the roughest part of the course so we decided to keep going for the finish with the flat. We ran as hard as we could on the remaining 3 tires and came into the main pits just ahead of another Ultra4 racer, Brad Falin. On corrected time we beat him by 48 seconds and finished 2nd in the class. We finished the race without a shred of rubber on the passenger rear Raceline wheel,” said Jesse Haines.
Chris Ridgway had a similar experience at the recent VORRA Fallon 250 night race when he got a flat and was forced to run on a bare Raceline wheel. In his post race interview he states: “When we got out to change a flat tire we got passed by Brad Falin. We had a 13 minute lead, so we had plenty of time to fix it, but the tool bag had fallen off with the socket! We drove for 20 to 25 miles on the rim doing between 45 and 55mph, which was gnarly as we were crabbing all over the place. Amazingly the wheel held up and didn’t allow any damage to the caliper or anything. We pulled up to someone’s pit and they changed it for us, we don’t even know who it was. We caught Falin, but we lost by 34 seconds in adjusted time. I hate loosing, but you know that’s part of racing, and that’s how it goes,” said Ridgway.
The strength of the Raceline wheels is unparallel when placed under miles of desert conditions. Racers should feel confident that the Raceline Wheels will certainly perform and keep them on the race course and in the heat of the win.

150 extreme sportsmen and women, four demanding disciplines, immensely challenging stages and a Czech victory. On Saturday the ninth edition of the outdoortrophy, one of the world’s hardest team competitions, took place in Lingenau/Vorarlberg (Austria).

the eyes of the entire extreme sports world were focused on the Bregenzerwald (Vorarlberg, Austria) last weekend. World and European champions, men and women, pros and amateurs and top athletes from 10 nations battled it out for the unofficial outdoor sports world championship in the ninth edition of the outdoortrophy. The relay competition, which includes mountain running, paragliding, wild water kayaking and mountain biking, is one of the hardest in the world. The weather gods were kind: the athletes were able to complete their fight against the elements in perfect water and wind conditions.

International stars compete
The extremely high level of the competition was clear right from the outset at the start of the mountain running race from the centre of the village of Egg. Mountain running world champion Helmut Schiessl was there as were top Italian athlete Gerd Frick (Zermatt marathon winner) and the two Czech mountain running stars Jan Havlicek and Robert Krupicka. The latter was the fastest to complete the 12 kilometre race with its 1,100 meter altitude difference, managing it in 1:06 hours to take his team “Opavanet / Tilak” into the lead ahead of Czech runners-up “Speed 8″ and Schiessl’s team “Land Rover Team Hörburger”. Krupicka handed over to paraglider Jan Skrabalek, who managed to defend the team’s lead with the second best time in this stage. The fastest flyer was Austrian Jakob Herrmann (Land Rover Team Hörburger) who took his team to second place. There was even more excitement to come: kayaker Tomas Slovak, who was first into the water, was also the first to hand over to the mountain bikers and the field became even tighter in his wake. Austria’s national kayaking champion Gerhard Schmid, a member of “Telekom Team Südtirol” who were in fact favourites to win, battled his way through the rapids to gain a top time, taking his team to third place and handing over to Italian Hannes Pallhuber so that he could launch a final attack on the 31.4 km mountain biking stage. But the favourites didn’t live up to expectations. Exceptional mountain biker Jaroslav Kulhavy secured victory for his team “Opavanet / Tilak” with a lead of three minutes and four seconds on the start to finish time – the first Czech triumph in nine years of outdoortrophy. Czech victory was completed by “Speed 8″ taking second place; Pallhuber and team “Telekom Südtirol” had to be satisfied with bronze.

Vorarlberg victory in amateur competition
Vorarlberg team “KFZ Geiger” won the amateur competition ahead of Czech competitors “7days”. The ladies’ competition was won by Austrian team “www.chooza.com”; “Hypo Vorarlberg Power Team” was crowned best company team.

Exciting supporting programme & outdoornight
The many fans who had come to watch really got their money’s worth not only from the competition but also in the supporting programme; an expo area in the finish zone, a wide-ranging children’s programme, a delicious barbecue and a party which is as famous in the outdoor scene as the competition itself. Big band “Die dicken Kinder” played up a storm for the outdoornight.

Anniversary trophy to come
The outdoortrophy will be taking place for the tenth time next year. The extreme sportsmen and women are especially keen to win this anniversary trophy. “We’ll be back” was the catchphrase heard amongst the athletes. More information at www.outdoortrophy.com.

The onboard video screen allowed us to check out the POV before the shoot. The video screen will play back the action without plugging a monitor in or running back to base to down load in your computer.
The X170 Action Camera from Drift Innovation is well worth the money.
