First-time offroad competitor V8 Supercar driver Craig Lowndes has proved himself an all-round motorsport champion with a first-place win with co-driver Kees Weel in the 2010 Australasian Safari which finished on the beach in Esperance, Western Australia this afternoon.

Bathurst moto rider Ben Grabham finished Leg 5 of the Australasian Safari without a hitch, finishing ten minutes ahead of the pack but others weren’t so fortunate, with third fastest Rod Faggotter skinning a tree, and Matt Fish, in fourth fastest position, going over the top of his bike in another action-packed day totalling 411 competitive kilometres.

If the vehicles in the Australasian Safari could talk, they’d be begging for a rest day after five gruelling days in the Western Australian outback, but despite this the top three positions held yesterday by Lowndes, Green and Garland remain intact after today’s 411km Leg.

Craig Lowndes and Kees Weel were tested by today’s tight track in their Holden Colorado but managed to finish fastest at the end of Leg One of Australasian Safari, nearly nine minutes ahead of Bruce Garland in the Isuzu DMAX, and 11 minutes ahead of Tony Quinn in his Mitsubishi Pajero.

With only 10 seconds separating the GHR Honda team-mates Jacob Smith and AJ Roberts overnight, the Condobolin rider was hoping to keep his Queensland rival at bay. Roberts dropped a further 19 seconds on the day’s first stage, but on the 204 kilometre second test came off his bike, injuring his shoulder and giving Smith some breathing space.

Swedish moto competitor and the world’s top female rally rider, Annie Seel, is putting her new Husaberg bike through its paces and testing out the Australian terrain for the first time.
