XRRA AREA BFE 2006

offroad56pic1Extreme Rock Racing

What is rock racing you ask? Take the agility and precision of rock crawling maneuvering over barriers that were thought impossible 10 years ago, add in speed and horse power with a few adjustments to the suspension, Like hydraulic bump stops, that is just a rubber bumper when you buy a stock vehicle, that keeps the suspension from bottoming out when suspension is fully loaded. During a normal day of rock racing suspension is fully extended and compressed that’s where hydraulic bump stops come in to play, The red Bull team of Dustin and Becca Webster are running Race Runner suspension Made by Sway-A-Way, When becca launches off a vertical and slams that bad boy against the ground the suspension compresses rapidly until contact is made with the adjustable bump stops at this point the bump stops rapidly slow the compression down by absorbing the energy and keeping more stress off the vehicle, this add another layer of protection for the vehicle and the driver.

offroad56picBack to the rock racing, The rules are simple the driver with the fastest time wins! The drivers make four runs a day, the first two are made on separate tracks after a intermission the same tracks are run the opposite way, the only penalties are for going out of boudries. The only other penalty is from a co-driver being on the course when the vehicle is in motion. A co driver is what is known as a spotter in the rock crawling world.

This was our first time at a rock race two words come to mind Good times! This sport may be new but it is here to stay, the adrenaline rush when you see a rock racer launch of of a jump hit the ground just in time to swing a U-turn and start in on some hard core wheeling all the while the clock is ticking, this makes for a very fast paced and entertain event.

Shannon Campbell and Palmer smoked the compition, putting those years of racing expspernce in action, driving a retired rock crawler that sat on the roof of Campbell enterprises well over a year. Around new years the Guys in the shop were talkin about TDS safari and decided to modify this one seater buggy to accommodate two people. The joke around the shop is this is a rental, Shannon had sold it to Ron Romero who drove it a tds, along with Shannon who demonstrated how to drive a rental. Shannon borrowed Ron’s buggy to use at the rock race, and from the looks of it he must have opted for the rental insurance (that wasn’t any Sunday driven).

Shannon plans to run the XRRA series this year, that is a huge commitment Due to the fact He is running We rock, which he took first place in their season opener in Globe Arizona.

A special thanks to Mike Weaver of XRRA one of the main guys making this series possible and to Jeremy Parriott of area BFE.
